These are fair play mysteries. The rule they are written to is that a fact is only hidden properly when the sentence carrying it is visibly doing something else, so the clues arrive inside a joke, a piece of admin, or somebody being rude. Nothing is flagged. You will not find a narrator telling you that a detail stayed with her, because that turns a plant into a promise and readers audit promises.
The other rule is that the answer has to be deducible. Every fact the ending needs appears earlier, usually three or four times, each time doing a different job, because a solution feels inevitable through repetition rather than through argument. Nobody volunteers the answer in a speech at the end.
The settings are small and specific: a rural mail route where one box has only ever received and never sent, a county prosecutor’s transcription work done at a kitchen table, a night dispatch desk covering six hundred square miles. The investigator is whoever happens to be holding the paperwork.
