Part 26
Part 26 of 27 of Eleven Years of Thursdays by Helen Abbott
One more thing, and then the rest of it is just our life.
Ray Kozak died in November of the following year. The building at 414 Brandt is condominiums now and there is a coffee place on the ground floor where the dead dentist used to be, and they have done a nice job, and I have never once gone in.
At the funeral home in Kettering, Danny stood in a line for fifty minutes to shake hands with a man’s two sons, and when he got to the front he said, “Your dad didn’t knock,” and the older one said he had no idea what that meant, and Danny said, “No, he wouldn’t have told you. It was the whole thing.”
He went out to the car after that and sat in it. It was a lot of people in one room.
On the way home he said, “I owe him eleven years of rent.”
“Mom paid the rent.”
“That’s not what I said.”
